Is your remodeling contractor certified?

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry is preparing homeowners for May, which is National Home Improvement Month, with tips on how to choose a professional remodeler.

NARI offers remodeling contractors the opportunity to become certified specialists and associates through a specialized certification program. The course is open to specialists who have been working in the remodeling field for a minimum of five consecutive years and be NARI members. They must also adhere to NARI's strict Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.

To prepare for certification, remodelers are given a study guide and a business management book. They are asked to complete a qualification form, which outlines the background of their experience and education in remodeling. NARI also offers study groups for different certification groups in the industry to prepare them for the one-day written examination. The exam tests for knowledge in business management, building codes and construction law, plans and specifications, tools and equipment, safety, standards of practice, math, and questions relating to their area of specialization.

Many members are certified in their specialties and homeowners should ask their remodeling contractors if they are Certified Remodelers and if they are using certified specialists such as Certified Remodeler Associate or a Certified Remodeler Specialist in one of the following areas:

Concrete and masonry.

Electrical systems.

Insulation.

Mechanical systems.

Plumbing.

Roofing and siding.

Architecture.

Designing.

Consulting.

The remodeling market, a $163 billion industry in the U.S. in 2002, is projected to grow to a $175 billion or more in 2003. It is estimated that more than a million homes per year undergo major renovation or remodeling.

NARI is a professional association whose members voluntarily subscribe to a strict code of ethics. Consumers may wish to search www.RemodelToday.com to find a qualified professional who is a member of NARI.

Consumers can also call the NARI National hotline at 800-611-NARI and request a free copy of NARI's brochure, "How to Select a Remodeling Professional," or visit www.RemodelToday.com and click on the homeowner's guide for more information.
