GFC offers firebreak plowing and burning assistance for Fayette Countians

The Georgia Forestry Commission is urging landowners to have pre-suppression firebreaks plowed at this time as a precaution against potential wildfire on their property. Wildfire can strike at anytime and without warning.

During fire season when GFC personnel and equipment are not tied up on wildfires, these "safety" firebreaks can be plowed. This should be planned for morning hours when personnel are most available and wildfire activity is low. There is a nominal charge for firebreak plowing.

Assistance with burning is also available and landowners should take advantage of this free service.

This time of the spring it becomes more difficult to burn woodlands safely without damaging trees, as trees begin to come out of their winter dormancy. Landowners wanting to burn woodlands should contact the Georgia Forestry Commission first for advice on how late in the season they can burn their woodlands.

The GFC also reminds all citizens that the Statewide Burning Permit Law requires that all persons contact their county fire department before outside burning is started to obtain weather information and a burning permit. Weather information provided determines whether or not debris burning or land management burning should be done.

Landowners and homeowners interested in pre-suppression firebreaks for their property or burning assistance should contact the Georgia Forestry Commission a few days in advance to schedule work to be done. Call 770-227-5522 or 770-358-1459.
