What's lurking in your garden?

Backyard Assn. can help you find out

The old saying, "ignorance is bliss," may not always be true.

Gardeners need to be aware of what is lurking in the garden. Mold, fungus, poisonous plants, spiders, and snakes abound in nature. In addition to natural elements, pesticides and chemicals are introduced into many gardens. The educated gardener will know when and how to safely deal with elements in the outdoors.

Jim Rodgers, owner of the Green Plant Market and a special guest at the Backyard Association meeting scheduled for April 8, is an avid native plantsman and enthusiastic naturalist. Rodgers will teach participants how to distinguish between poisonous and non-poisonous snakes. He will help gardeners learn to identify poisonous plants and spiders and review ways to protect themselves from spiders, snakes and poisonous plants. This session is for anyone who would like to enjoy the outdoors with greater peace of mind.

The Backyard Association, sponsored by Coweta County Extension Service, is open to the public and meets at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday evening of each month except December. Reservations are required and admission is free. The sessions are held at the Coweta County Extension Service, 21 East Washington Street in Newnan. For more information, contact 770-254-2620.
