Spring Garden Tour this weekend

It's time for the annual Spring Garden Tour in Peachtree City, scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday, to benefit Peachtree City Elementary School.

Now in its fifth year, the event is attracting hundreds of visitors every spring for tours of outdoor gardens at some of the community's finest homes. Eight homes are on this year's list, which combines a few repeat attractions with some new ones, according to organizer Barbara Evans.

"I've got a few who have been very faithful and opened up their homes every year," she said. "But I always try to find some new ones."

Funds raised by the tour go to a variety of projects at the school, such as playground equipment and landscaping. Evans came up with the idea when her daughter, now a fifth-grader, entered Peachtree City Elementary.

Homeowners participate in the tour at whatever level is comfortable for them. Some are not even at home when the tour is going on, Evans said, while others are eager to interact with their guests. "We have a Master Gardener on this year's tour," said Evans, adding that another home will have a carriage house with a display of the owner's woodwork.

Visitors are not only from the local community, as people come from Atlanta and Newnan, among other places, each year to see the sights.

The tour will run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 in advance and available at Beard and Company at The Avenue. Same-day tickets are $12 and can be purchased at St. Andrews Square.
