Local swimmers place at state

With several swimmers earning individual points, the Southern Crescent Aquatic Team age group state team recently finished fourth overall in the Division II standings of the 2003 Georgia 14-and-Under Age Group Championships in Savannah.

"It was a fun meet and we swam extremely well," said SCAT head coach Jamey Myers. "I'm very proud of our performance."

Bailey DeRidder and Jessica Heimann each earned an individual third place finish. Competing in the Girls 10-and-Under group, DeRidder finished third in the 50-yard backstroke, while Heimann did the same in the 100-yard breaststroke.

DeRidder added fourth-place finishes in the 500-yard Freestyle, the 200-yard Individual Medley and the 100-yard Breaststroke. Heimann also had a fifth-place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke.

Lauren Cartwright, competing in the Girls 13-14 age group, finished fourth in both the 100 and 200-yard Freestyles. She added a fifth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle and also finished sixth in the 200-yard Individual Medley.

Nicole Roddenbery, also swimming in the Girls 13-14 age group, finished fifth in the 100-yard Butterfly.

Other swimmers scoring individual points for SCAT were Alex Menke, Kiersten Mossberg, and Zach Payne. Payne took 10th in the Boys 13-14 200-yard Butterfly, Menke finished 12th in the Boys 10-and-Under 100-yard Butterfly, and Mossberg took 12th in the Girls 10-and-Under 100-yard Freestyle.

Myers was also very pleased with the SCAT relay teams in the meet, all of which placed in the top eight.

"At a state meet, relays are vitally important because they are worth double the points," said Myers. "SCAT swimmers stepped up and swam with the best in the state."

The 13-14 girls relay team of Lauren Cartwright, Nicole Roddenbery, Casey DeRidder and Georgia Highsmith took fourth in both the 800-yard Freestyle and 200-yard Medley Relays, and finished fifth, sixth and seventh in the 200-yard Freestyle, 400-yard Medley and 400-yard Freestyle relays, respectively.

The Girls 10-and-Under relay team of Bailey DeRidder, Jessica Heimann, Kiersten Mossberg and Sydney Currenti finished seventh in the 200-yard Freestyle and eighth in the 200-yard Medley Relays.

Also competing in the meet for SCAT were Samantha Currenti, Peter Menke and David Menchinger.
