Six former Fayette County High School sports figures were honored at a banquet for their prowess in sports, both playing and coaching, and many of them for more than one sport.

The honoree program began five years ago and is sponsored by the Fayette County High School Sports Hall of Fame committee and Robert Smith of H&R Campus Supply. Committee members consist of Don Apking, Addison Lester, Gary Phillips, Trigg Dalrymple, Howell McElroy and Charles Warr.

Honoree Jody Allen was introduced by Howell McElroy. Jody is the son of former teacher and principal Jean Redwine Allen and the late Coach Jim Allen.

A graduate of the class of 1979, he lettered for 4 years in football, serving as captain in his senior year, lettered 4 years in baseball and 3 years in basketball. He was selected for the Metro Atlanta All Star Baseball Team in 1979. Graduating from Valdosta State in 1983, he has coached at Arkansas State University, Ole Miss, University of Alabama, and Florida State University, where he is currently employed.

Fayette High School principal Charles Warr introduced Jill Joiner, who has been a coach on campus since 1980. She has coached softball, basketball and track. She is the first and only coach in school history with an overall records of 282 wins, 162 losses. Her softball team was the state champion in 2002, and she was the head GACA South All-Star coach in 2002. In accepting the award, she said, "I can't imagine not teaching and coaching."

Belinda Grooms McCastle, class of 1987, works for the Fayette County Sheriff's Department and is associate pastor at New Hope United Methodist Church in Fayetteville. While in high school, she was a 3-year starter on the varsity basketball team, on the track team for 4 years, was MVP her senior year, a member of the cross-country team for 3 years, in the marching band for 2 years, a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and was on the senior superlative roll as the Most Athletic. Her advice to future high school sports figures? "Don't let anything stand in your way."

Class of 1991 graduate Doug Seigle participated in soccer, where he spent 3 years as starting goalkeeper, 3 years as a starter, was a state runner-up in 1991, and was on the 1st team All-State in 1991. Professionally, he has played 2 seasons with the Eastern Indoor Soccer League and 5 seasons with the United States Independent Soccer League. He has also been elected into his alma mater's Hall of Fame in 2002 at Viterbo University in LaCrosse, Wisc.

Glenn Clack, class of 1972, was a 3-year letterman in track and also football, where he was a wide receiver. Georgia Tech roommate Lester Addison served on the other end. Clack achieved high school records in the long jump, triple jump, high hurdles and mile relay team, and acquired 700 career points. At Georgia Tech he was a 4-year letterman in track and in his senior year was a Metro 6 Conference intermediate hurdles champion and mile relay team champion.

A posthumous award was given to the late L.B. "Red" Hickson, who coached at the high school from 1953 to 1957. He died last year. While at Fayette County High School, he coached girls basketball, who were the Flint Invitational Tournament champions in 1955-1956, the boys basketball team, who had an overall record of 27 wins, 22 losses, and in baseball, the team in 1954 was the most offensive team in school history (to that point), as well as Region 4-B North champions the next year.

Nearly 100 persons were in attendance at the induction ceremony.
