High school sports briefs The Sandy Creek Lady Patriots finished third in the recent East Coweta Invitational soccer tournament. After a 4-0 loss to Northgate, the Lady Patriots fell 2-1 in overtime to East Coweta before defeating Alexander 2-1 on two goals by Jenna Thomason. Keeper Kristen Burnett then recorded a shutout as Sandy Creek won 4-0 over Douglas County. Several local athletes placed at the Georgia Coaches Invitational meet at Georgia Tech last weekend. On the girls' side, Cammy Andrews of Fayette County tied for sixth in the high jump and Jenny Norman of Starr's Mill placed eighth in the discus throw. In boys' action, Starr's Mill finished eighth in the 4x400-meter relay and fifth in the 800 sprint medley, while Johnny Edwards of the Panthers placed eighth in the 100 and teammate Michael Kursteiner tied for sixth in the high jump. The Starr's Mill Lady Panthers defeated Lovejoy 15-0 in a March 14 match. Shelley Wegrzyn, Tannah Castro and Beth Meadors scored three goals apiece, while Kelley O'Hara, Michelle Callen and Katie Jacobsen each contributed two goals. Lovejoy's boys defeated Landmark 3-2 in an overtime match March 18. Eric Worrell scored both Landmark goals, one off an assist from Joseph Keywood and the other after a 30-yard run with the ball. After Lovejoy scored in the first overtime, the second extra period was not played due to darkness. Senior swimmer Kirsten Cartoski of Our Lady of Mercy was selected to the 2003 Speedo Academic All-American Team by the National Swim Coach's Associaton. She was also selected to the All State first team by the Georgia Swim Coach's Association after winning the 100-yard breastroke title at the Georgia High School State Championships. She will attend and swim at Yale Univerity in the fall of 2003. Landmark shut out W.D. Mohammed 3-0 in a boys' match March 20. Josh Polgardi scored on a header off a Joseph Keywood throw-in, and Eric Worrell also scored off a Keywood throw-in. Blake Fertitta took a long kick from Keywood and dribbled past several defenders for the final score. Starr's Mill downed Newnan 4-1 in girls' action March 18. The Lady Panthers' Kelley O'Hara scored the first goal early, assisted by Shelley Wegrzyn, and the two combined for another score in the second half to break a 1-1 tie. O'Hara completed a hat trick two minutes later off a rebound after a shot by Beth Meadors. In the final six minutes, Meadors scored unassisted from 35 yards out. Newnan's lone goal came midway through the first half when Emily Asher's corner kick was deflected to Christie McDonald, who scored on a header.
