Benefit golf tourney raises $6,000 A recent benefit golf tournament for cancer-stricken Stephanie Phillips, a member of the state champion Fayette County High School softball team, collected more than $6,000 to help the family, whose members have had to miss work to provide care. "A group of teachers and coaches put together this event that, despite rainy cold weather, was an outstanding success," said Fayette County head softball coach Jill Joiner. Stephanie, diagnosed with cancer during the Lady Tigers' state softball championship run, came to the final game in Columbus to cheer her teammates to the ultimate victory. She has been taking medical treatments since that November win. Because her mother, Patti, is being required to take time from work to be with her daughter during the treatments, expenses have continued to pile up, according to Joiner. "Teammates and schoolmates have used various fundraising methods to supplement needed funds and this golf tournament has been one of the most successful so far," said Joiner. "This was one of the worst Saturdays in recent memory, but every person who signed up for the tournament showed up and almost everyone one completed the 18 holes of golf, which was an outstanding expression of support for Stephanie." Local merchants contributed prizes, food and sponsored each hole of the tournament, allowing most of the funds to be given to Stephanie. A total of $6,035 was netted from the day-long event, according to the softball coach. Stephanie's dad, Steve, thanked the golfers, the merchants and those who hosted the golf tournament, saying it was the finest example of community support he had ever witnessed and he was honored to live in such a place. Hosting the event, in addition to Joiner, were teachers/coaches Janis Green, Karen Sagon, Jill Collins and Stacey Smith. Various teachers and classes provided desserts and other items for the event.
