Rapson proposes bonus for city workers who get grants

Peachtree City employees may soon get a financial incentive to seek grants for the city.

A proposal was submitted by councilman Steve Rapson at last week's City Council retreat to give employees a bonus equal to 10 percent of the grants they secure for Peachtree City.

To qualify, the employee would have to come up with the grant concept by doing research on his or her own time, Rapson said. But once the idea is approved by the department head or chief, the employee could use his or her time on the city "clock" to research and prepare the grant proposal.

"I'm just trying to encourage employees to try to think outside the box and bring additional revenues to the city," Rapson said.

Mayor Steve Brown noted that the city misses out on several grant programs because of the city's high median income.

City Planner David Rast pointed out that grant writing has become a more significant part of his job as he has helped secure over $1.14 million in grants, most of which came through the Atlanta Regional Commission's Livable Centers Initiative.

City finance director Paul Salvatore said it's important for the city to pursue grants from traditional sources as opposed to funds donated from local companies. The city's Finance Department also wants to have a hand in the grant process, Salvatore added.
