Lake Peachtree beach concept is deep-sixed

Due to a host of potential problems, the idea of building a "beach" on Lake Peachtree at Picnic Park has bitten the dust.

The idea, put forth by councilman Dan Tennant, would cost an estimated $251,000 to build and an additional $29,000 annually to maintain, said Randy Gaddo, director of leisure services. The topic was discussed at the City Council's retreat last Friday.

Not only is the cost a significant factor, but getting approval from various agencies might be difficult since the lake is used as a drinking water reservoir, Gaddo noted. And if the beach is built, what would happen to the geese who frequent the Picnic Park area along Lake Peachtree, Gaddo questioned.

There were also questions as to whether a beach area would violate the city's regulations that require an undisturbed 100 foot buffer along Lake Peachtree, Gaddo said.

"After that favorable presentation, I don't see any downside," Tennant joked, admitting the idea wouldn't work.
