Spring is just around the corner and while that means warmer weather and longer days, it also means insect season.

Most people are fortunate enough to not have a serious insect problem. However, if you would like to see some amazing insects, including exotic varieties that you probably won't see ruining a picnic or barbecue, head to Callaway Gardens to enter "The Crawlaseum, A Live Bug Exhibit."

There will be over 40 species of insects and related animals featured in ore than two dozen aquariums in the exhibit hall of Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center. The exhibits will also change regularly so that visitors who return to the Crawlaseum more than once will see a different exhibit and learn something new each time. There will be several different categories of insects at the exhibit including beetles, roaches, Georgia natives, aquatic insects, insect relatives (which include spiders and scorpions) and many more.

"Insects play a vital role in the environment. Some keep the planet clean while others have the important job of helping to create our food supplies through pollination," said Celia Stuart Whitman, entomologist and manager of Callaway's Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center. "This exhibit is a wonderful way to entertain our guests both young and old, while teaching them about the environment."

Visitors will be able to touch some of the insects and they will learn all about the bugs from informative staff members who will be on hand. Throughout the year there will also be lectures, a Bug Scavenger Hunt through the Gardens, an insect jewelry fashion show and screenings of the film "Microcosms," which gives viewers a glimpse of what the world looks like from an insect's perspective.

In addition to the Crawlaseum, Callaway Gardens will also feature David Roger's Big Bugs, a larger than life display of wooden insects. Big Bugs will be at Callaway Gardens from May 16-Aug. 24.

"The Crawlaseum, A Live Bug Exhibit," is included with admission to The Gardens at Callaway. The exhibit is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (6 p.m. after March 29) until Sept. 1 in the Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center. Admission is $12 per adult; $6 per child (ages 6-12); and children five and under are admitted free. On Marvelous Mondays free admission is given to up to five paying guests who enter the Gardens on a Monday in a vehicle occupying a child five or younger. The Marvelous Mondays program is through Nov. 17.
