Flat Rock Lady Eagles win MMSAL basketball championship By MICHAEL
BOYLAN The Flat Rock Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team recently won the Metro Middle School Athletic League Championship. It was the first time in the history of the school that a girls team had won a championship. After completing an undefeated seventh-grade season, the Flat Rock team had high hopes for their eighth-grade season but things didn't always go easy. The team found the eighth-grade season to be longer and more difficult, struggling offensively for the early part of the season. The Lady Eagles were tough on defense though, holding their opponents to an average of 17 points per game. The team ended the regular season with a record of 11-3. Their first opponent in the league tournament was Rising Starr Middle School and the Lady Eagles won 52-22. Their second game pitted them against Austin Roads, a team that had defeated them earlier in the season. Flat Rock edged out Austin Roads in the tournament with a 23-20 win. The final game of the tournament was against Union Grove and Flat Rock emerged victorious with a 29-20 win. Flat Rock's final record was 14-3 and the team outscored their opponents 531-295. The team's captain was Alice Crisp, who offered her teammates great leadership throughout the season. Candice Brooks led the team in scoring and reobunds with 147 points and 126 rebounds. Erinn Knight was the team's point guard and controlled the ball and the pace of the game for the Lady Eagles. Jade Bynum gave the team flexibility playing several positions and providing a potent three point threat for the offense. Jairea McClamb was a defensive spark for the team, while Jazzi Hope, who was injured early in the season, analyzed team's offenses and defenses. Jenna Jackson was aburst of speed for the Lady Eagles and produced a number of steals for the defense, Lynsey Paschal was also tremendous on defense and came alive on offense in the second half of the season. Marina Flemming was another player with tremendous speed and an amazing work ethic and Mary McCurdy brought a natural athletic spirit to the team. Two seventh-graders, Olympia Haney and Courtney Lowery, were brought up to the team after Christmas break and were vital parts of the team. The Flat Rock Lady Eagles were coached by Sandy Martin, while Kim Lorber was the assistant coach. The manager and statistician were Bianca McCloud and Christopher Nunez.
