Baseball season opens for high school teams

The local high school baseball teams kicked off their baseball seasons on Monday. Fayette County and McIntosh started the 2003 season with victories, while Starr's Mill and Our Lady of Mercy found themselves on the losing end.

McIntosh defeated Griffin 13-6. Griffin put three runs on the board in the top of the first inning, but McIntosh answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning and more runs in each of the next four innings, including five in the fifth. John King was the winning pitcher for the Chiefs, giving up five hits and four walks, while striking out seven. Tim Battle pitched the fifth and sixth innings and struck out two batters, while Drew Grant pitched the seventh and also struck out two batters.

Battle and Grant also did well offensively. Battle went three for four with three RBIs, a two run homerun and two stolen bases. Grant was five for five with four singles and a three run homerun. Ryan Schwartz went two for four with three RBIs and Dustin Hirschfeld went two for three with two RBIs. The Chiefs outhit the Bears 16-6. McIntosh will host Landmark this afternoon at 5:30 p.m. and will travel to Sandy Creek on Friday for a 7 p.m. game.

Starr's Mill lost to Banneker 4-3. The Panthers gave up two runs early due to an errant throw from home plate to third and a wild pitch. Bobby Clark drove in a run for the Panthers with a double and Danny Hartpence crossed the plate on an errant Banneker throw. Starr's Mill enjoyed a 3-2 lead but gave up two runs in the sixth inning and lost their season opener. Starr's Mill will play at Spalding today at 5:30 p.m. and will host Creekside at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Fayette County High School hosted Creekside on Monday and won 7-0. The Tigers will have a busy rest of the week as they will take on Windsor Forest in Douglas, ga. at 6 p.m. on Thursday before an 8 p.m. match against Glynn Academy in Brunswick on Friday and a 1 p.m. game against Brunswick in Brunswick on Saturday.

Our Lady of Mercy's Bobcats opened the season with a 12-0 loss to Bremen. Our Lady of Mercy plays at Mt. Paran in Marietta today at 4:15 p.m. and will host Temple at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
