St.Mary Magdalene Catholic, Cokes Chapel Methodist join for Ash Wednesday service

Parishioners of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Mission will join members of Coke's Chapel United Methodist Church for a special observance of Ash Wednesday, March 5 at 7 p.m. The ecumenical service will be held in the sanctuary of Coke's Chapel on Lower Fayetteville Road between Peachtree City and Newnan. St. Mary Magdalene's property adjoins Coke's Chapel's.

Father Dan Fleming, pastor of the new mission, and the Rev. John Hagen, pastor of Coke's Chapel, will share the leadership of both religious communities.

The traditional service, observed in both faiths, will include the distribution of ashes.

"The ashes are an ancient symbol of repentance and a sign of one's mortality," a spokesperson explained. "The Ash Wednesday service marks the beginning of Lent as a period of penance and conversion leading up to the Easter celebration on April 20."
