Christ the King Church will host Ash Wednesday service Christ the King Charismatic Episcopal Church will celebrate Ash Wednesday with a service Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. "Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent in the western church," said David Epps, rector of Christ the King. "Ashes, as a Jewish sign of penance, were accepted by Christians and now are used primarily on Ash Wednesday. Derived from burning the palm leaves from the previous year's Palm Sunday, the ashes are blessed and imposed on the foreheads of the faithful, often in the sign of a cross, during the ceremony following the sermon. Holy Communion normally follows. "This outward symbol is a reminder of human mortality," Epps continued, "that people 'are made of dust and return to dust' and also serves as a reminder of human frailty and as a symbol of repentance. On Ash Wednesday, many churches encourage their members to observe a day of fasting and abstinence. The liturgical color is purple, serving as a reminder of penitence." The service is open to the public. Christ the King is on Ga. Hwy. 34 between Newnan and Peachtree City. For additional information, contact Epps or the church office at 770-252-2428.
