This week's Anglican-Lutheran Ash Wednesday service marks the 19th anniversary of two Peachtree City congregations' joining in worship at the beginning of Lent.

St. Andrew's-in-the-Pines Episcopal Church and Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church will worship together on Wednesday, March 5 at 7 p.m. at the Lutheran Church, 101 N. Peachtree Pkwy.

The service will include the celebration of Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes, an ancient Christian symbol of mortality.

Christians throughout the world set aside the 40 days before Easter for meditation and penitence. Churches often forego flowers, emphasizing prayer and self-denial in solemn gratitude for Christ's sacrifice.

The Rev. Dan Brigham, rector of St. Andrew's, will deliver the sermon, with the Rev. John Weber, Rev. Miriam Beecher, and the Rev. Frank Larisey leading the rest of the service.

The two congregations' choirs and instrumentalists including the adult hand bell choir, brass, and flutes will provide special music under the direction of David Beecher, minister of music at Christ Our Shepherd, and Karl Dietmeyer.

A reception in the church's fellowship hall will follow worship. The community is welcome.

St. Andrew's offers Ash Wednesday services at 6 a.m. and noon at 316 Peachtree Pkwy. North.

The Lutherans will also worship at noon on Ash Wednesday. Pastor Beecher will preach; Pastor Weber and Intern Chad Langdon will assist with Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes.

The community is welcome at any of these services. For further information, call Christ Our Shepherd at 770-487-8717, or St. Andrews at 770-487-8415.
