The soccer season is still young and local teams are starting to find their strides, when the weather allows.

Tuesday night saw Starr's Mill's girls and boys teams host Harrison. The Lady Panthers struck early with Viktoria Frost scoring the first goal less than five minutes in and Shelley Wegryzyn adding a goal a little over three minutes later. Assisting on Wegryzyn's goal were Kelley O'Hara and Susan O'Brien. The third and final goal for the Starr's Mill girls was scored with just over 11 minutes remaining on a direct kick by Beth Meadors. Starr's Mill was in control for much of the game, outshooting the Lady Hoyas 23-5. In the boys game, the Panthers beat Harrison 3-0. Billy Jacobsen got two goals, while CJ Cooper added one.

Starr's Mill will play at Parkview on Saturday with the girls playing at 4 p.m. and the boys following at 6 p.m. Parkview's girls are ranked fourth in AAAAA, while the boys are ranked first. Both junior varsity teams will play at Parkview on Saturday as well.

The Newnan Lady Cougars earned their first area win Tuesday night with a 17-0 win over Riverdale. The game was played over 40 minutes due to a GHSA rule requiring a 10-0 differential in the first 20 minutes to shorten the match. With it just 9-0 after 20 minutes, the teams played the full first half. Newnan was led by Christie McDonald and Lanie Scott with four goals and two assists each. Also scoring for the Lady Cougars were Wynn Mottola with three goals and two assists, Lauren Clifton with two goals and two assists, Caroline Child with two goals, Ginny Child with a goal and two assists, Jennifer Rainey with one goal, and Ashley Hawkins with an assist.

McIntosh's Lady Chiefs have had two similar matches, beating Riverdale 18-0 and Lovejoy on Tuesday night 15-0. The Lady Chiefs will host East Coweta at 6 p.m. tonight with the boys following at 8 p.m. The boys lost to fifth ranked Brookwood 1-0 in the Brookwood tournament last Friday. The Lady Chiefs are ranked third in AAAAA with the boys currently ranked sixth.

Sandy Creek's boys and girls will have a busy weekend as they play in the LaGrange Invitational. They faced Carrollton last night, will face LaGrange tonight, with the girls playing at 5:30 and the boys following, and will wrap up the tournament with games against Pacelli at 10 a.m. for the girls and noon.
