High school soccer season underway By MICHAEL
BOYLAN Winter sports are over or nearing their end, so it must be time for soccer. The Starr's Mill boys got a 1-0 win over South Gwinnett in the Dillon Invitational before their game against Brookwood was rained out. Billy Jacobsen scored the winning goal off of an assist from CJ Cooper. Coach Mike Hanie cited the excellent play of his defense and goalie Anthony Pecca who recorded his first shutout of the season. Starr's Mill is currently ranked second in the state. They have 14 members of last year's region championship winning squad returning this season. They faced Harrison last night and will play at Parkview, the current top-ranked team in AAAAA, Saturday at 6 p.m. after the girls' game at 4 p.m. The Starr's Mill boys JV team tied Pope 2-2. Trailing 2-0, Riley Phelps scored off of a header after an assist by Kyle Nowicki. Michael Vandebuerie scored the tying goal. The junior varsity boys will take on Woodward tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. Other games scheduled for this week include Fayette County's boys and girls against Mundy's Mill Friday night at Tara Stadium. The girls play at 5:30 p.m. and the boys game will follow. McIntosh's boys and girls will host East Coweta with the girls game starting at 6 p.m. and the boys game following. Sandy Creek's boys and girls will play in the LaGrange Invitational Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The girls will face Carrollton on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., LaGrange Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Pacelli at 10 a.m. Saturday with the boys playing the same teams immediately afterward.
