Starr's Mill and Fayette wrestle in AAAAA meet, Landmark takes third in Class A

Starr's Mill and Fayette County sent a number of wreslters to the AAAAA state tournament over the weekend. Starr's Mill placed fourth, while Fayette County finished 13th. The Tigers were one point away from an 11th place finishand just nine points away from a top ten finish. Both schools got great efforts from their teams and had several wrestlers finish very well.

Starr's Mill had six wrestlers earn medals, which means a sixth-place finish or better. Nick Bennett (152), Kyle Verzello (160) and Andy Smith (275) all finished in second place, while Jordan Powers (171) finished third, Mike Cosper (125) finished fourth and Scott Molleson (145) finished sixth.

Fayette County's highest placer was Drake McCoy, who finished fifth in 275. McCoy was 6-2 in the tournament. He lost to the eventual state champ by a point and the third-place finsiher, a state champ in AAAA last year, by a point in overtime. Will Barnes (189) and Chris Leslie (215) finished in the top eight and Matt Kellerman (130) and Stephen McElrath (135) finished in the top 10. Ten of the 11 wrestlers who competed for Fayette County won at least one match in the tournament.

Fayette County finished with a 23-6 record, which ties the school record for wins in a season.

Landmark Christian School placed third in the Class A state tournament. The War Eagles had nine wrestlers qualify for the tournament.

Jeremy Smith (135) was state champion of his weight class, while Daniel Cox (125), Jeremy Brown (140) and Ethan Everett (152) placed second. Wren Gibby (160) and Kyle Flavin (130) placed third, Bryan Hoffler (112) placed fourth and Eddie Solly (171) placed fifth. Nick Taussig (215) placed outside of the top six.
