Miss Sandy Creek Pageant set for Saturday

The 2003 Miss Sandy Creek High School Pageant will be held Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Commons Area of the school in Tyrone. Donna Lowry, education reporter for WXIA T.V. in Atlanta will be on of the three very qualified judges of this annual event. Lowry also serves as an honorary board member for the Patriot Hall Auditorium Committee.

Joining Lowry in judging will be Jennefer Tasker and Linda Hooper. Tasker is a former Miss Teenage Georgia who also competed in the National Miss Teen pageant in 1990 and was honored to have been selected as third runner-up. She is a very talented mother of three who has performed in numerous musicals including the role of Sandy in "Grease" and Hodel in "Fiddler on the Roof." Tasker is a current resident of Fayetteville.

Hooper is a native of the Pacific Northwest but now resides in Peachtree City where she is the director of Music Alive (formerly The Peachtree Music Machine). As a former first runner-up in the Miss Oregon pageant, Hooper has judged state and local beauty pageants for the Miss America organization. She has performed the lead in musicals such as "Oklahoma," "South Pacific," and "My Fair Lady" and has had the opportunity to travel the United States as well as the world.

The pageant will be hosted by Michael Vaughn, a well-known local actor/musician and director. He has starred in four national tours including performances in Canada and Mexico with the American Theatre of Philadelphia. Local performances include "The King and I," "Lil' Abner," "The Fantasticks," "Annie," "The Odd Couple," "Guys and Dolls," and "The Boys Next Door." Offstage, Michael has directed "Oliver!," "School House Rock, Live!," "Footloose" and "Fiddler on the Roof" for the Clayton Alliance for Summer Theater.

The Sandy Creek Choral Department hosts the pageant and all proceeds benefit the choral program. Various local businesses such as Anthony Michael's Hair Salon in Peachtree City contribute the prizes and honorariums for the winners and the officials who donate their time to the production.

The pageant is open to all Sandy Creek female students. Many are nominated by school clubs or school affiliated activities. Family, friends, clubs and local businesses then sponsor the contestants. Judging is based on teacher recommendations, personal interviews with each judge and the formal gown competition that evening. Last year's winner was Ashley McKinney.

One of the highlights of the pageant each year is the tuxedo fashion show in which members of the Men's Chorus model the latest prom styles. Harris Stone Cleaners in Fayetteville will provide the tuxedos.

The Sandy Creek Choral program has reeived many honors under the direction of Millie Turek including invitations to the Select Chorus to sing at the annual conference of the Georgia Music Educators Association. The Select Women's Chorus won all awards in their category at a national choral competition in Washington, D.C.

The pageant is open to the public. Tickets are $7 in advance and $8 at the door.
