Teams exit regular season, enter region tournaments By MICHAEL
BOYLAN Several of the local high school basketball teams ended the regular season with a win and headed into this week's region tournaments full of confidence and high hopes. Starr's Mill's girls defeated McIntosh 57-34 on Friday and got a good team effort. Erica Harris was the leading scorer with 23 points and nine rebounds. Ashley Marine and Jenny Norman also pulled in nine rebounds a piece in the win. The Lady Chiefs led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter but found themselves down 21-19 at the half. Coach Bob Ferguson had his Lady Panthers change up their offense in the third quarter and saw his team pull away with the win. Lindsay Murphy scored 12 points for the Lady Chiefs while Alice Lowery added nine. The Starr's Mill boys did not play as well and found themselves on the losing side 51-30. The Chiefs played with a lot of defensive intensity and patience on offense. They never relinguished the lead once during the game. Sterling Brown and John King each scored 13 points for the Chiefs. Both McIntosh's boys and girls faced off against Mundy's Mill in the play in game for the region 4-AAAAA tournament Monday night and won. The Lady Chiefs had the lead for the entire game, at one point strecthing it out to 10 points, but Mundy's Mill battled and kept it close. The lady Chiefs won 44-39 and got 13 points a piece from Murphy and Haynes Kleinmeyer. In the boys game, McIntosh played a solid game and held on for a 62-58 win. Brett Boron scored 15 points for the Chiefs. McIntosh's Lady Chiefs faced Riverdale last night at 8:30 p.m., following the Starr's Mill's girls game against Carver at 7 p.m. The Starr's Mill boys will take on Newnan this afternoon at 5:30 p.m. following the Fayette County/Riverdale game at 4 p.m. McIntosh will face Lovejoy tonight. The Fayette County girls faced East Coweta at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Sandy Creek's Lady Patriots finished the season with their fourth straight win, a 59-15 victory over Northgate. The Lady Patriots had 10 members of the team score some points. Jennifer Jaracz led the team with 12 points while Ramsey Heft added 10 points and Tiffany Paschal pulled in eight rebounds. They opened the tournament last night with a game against Alexander at 7 p.m. The Sandy Creek boys built a big lead in the first quarter of their game against Northgate and then let the Vikings coast back into the game by the half before building another lead in the third quarter and hanging on for the 60-50 win. Coach Maurice Triche played a lot of the members of his team and got an outstanding game from Andrew Gardner, who finished with 11 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. Aaron caruthers was the leading scorer with 17 points while Kevin Criag finished with 15 points. Sandy Creek finished the regular season with a 15-10 record and captured the fourth seed in the region. They opened the tournament on Monday with a rematch against Northgate.
