Smith retiring as pastor of First Presbyterian

After 34 years of ministering to his congregation in Peachtree City, the Rev. Don Smith recently announced his plans to retire from the ministry. Smith's retirement will become effective Feb. 28.

Smith began preaching at First Presbyterian when the congregation met in the old post office/city hall/Fayette State Bank building a building which is no longer in existence when portable chairs were placed in the post office portion. The congregation later moved to property across the street and built a formal church, with several additions for growth being made through the years.

"He shepherded a small church in a small city into a magnificent loving church in a large city," said Carolyn Sirkel, a member of the church publications committee.

Smith will preach his final services Sunday, Feb. 23, at the 9:30 a.m. contemporary service and the 11 a.m. conventional service. That afternoon, from 3-5 p.m.,the congregation will host an open house in the Fellowship Hall for Smith and his wife, Jane.

First Presbyterian is at 206 Willowbend Rd. The congregation invites all in the community to Smith's final services and to the open house.
