Remembering The Citizen's first managing editor . . .

I'm deeply saddened to hear of [Managing Editor] Dave Hamrick's death [in March 2002], not just because he was a great guy and a great editor, but because of the loss to society of a man who didn't let his judgment be clouded as info-tainment profitably supplants journalism across the globe.

As a former reporter of his, I cherish the confidence Dave gave me that there remain strongholds of truth like The Citizen, trumpeting the supremacy of truth-based news versus boosterism. We lost a champion, and it's staggering.

I remember Dave most for the day he hired me at The Citizen. I warned him that I have a talent for seeing to the core of corruption, and the truth can get ugly for everyone involved. He bubbled over with so much enthusiasm, he seemed to stand involuntarily, saying, "Boy, is Cal going to want to meet you!"
