Valentine's Day forever!

By KNOX HERNDON
Pastor

Just imagine, Valentine's Day approaches again in the year of our Lord 2003. Since 9/11, our world has certainly changed, but there are some things that never change.

In the Bicentennial year (1976) on February the 14th, Robert Knox Herndon married Lydia Anna Rainey. On that special Valentine's Day, Lydia Anna Rainey became Lydia R. Herndon. Personally I thought it pretty smart to marry in the Bicentennial year on Valentine's Day so I would forever remember the date! Twenty seven years later, due to this "thing" called "love" we are still happily married.

I was reading my Bible and ran across 1 John 4:8 which simple states, "God IS Love." I realize that many things are very clear in the scriptures and that some things are a mystery. So maybe this scripture is a mystery, but it appears to me that whenever we talk or sing or think about "real love," we just might be dealing with God! Wow what a wonderful thought!!

I have initiated a ritual in our household that I will continue as long as I live. When I arise each morning, I first swing my legs over the bed unto the floor and say "this is the day the Lord has made I will rejoice and be glad in it." I then take "Bandit" our dog out, unless Robbie our son, hasn't already done it. I then go into the kitchen and heat up two cups of hot water. I then put in my "Orange Cappuccino" (that is the only vice I have left these days that and lying). HA! (Never trust a man who says he has no vices). I then take that cup to my bride of 27 years and always say the same thing, "room service!" She smiles and of course appreciates the coffee. I guess it's to, in some way, make up for being a slob for leaving my clothes around when we first married.

I have told this story before, but it is too special to not tell again. To celebrate our twenty-third anniversary I brought my wife a very special gift. She is a very special wife, so I brought her a bear rug that I had gotten while in Alaska. To personalize the special gift, I had the bear rug backed in her colors, forest green and burgundy. Personally I thought it a great unique idea for a great unique lady, but for some strange reason, she didn't fathom the uniqueness of the gift. Do you think maybe it could have been he small fact that I presented it to her on "Mother's Day??"

Anyway, off to Freidman's Jewelry Store I went. I went into the store and asked if they had any jewelry dog houses in gold with a guy's head coming out of the entrance. She said they didn't have anything like that so I had to buy her a very traditional gold ring with several stones in it. Guys, there is a lesson here somewhere. Personally, I think Freidman's Jewelry could make a "mint" selling jewelry with the "dog house motif."

To further redeem myself, we took a trip to Helen Georgia the day after Valentine's Day and it was really special. The town was virtually deserted and the best part was that the hotel was only $35.00 since it was on an off day and the weather was wonderful. We found a superb little German restaurant and ate and talked about the years of ministry and the places we had lived, and all the wonderful people God had allowed us to meet and work with over the years. As I sat across from my bride, I realized that only God could have put all this together and that again the scriptures rang true that "He IS love."

So remember when you say, "I LOVE you," you are dealing with "The Almighty." By the way guys, Kroger has carnations for 99 cents with a free card!
