Airport Authority offers free rent for first year to attract avionics business

Falcon Field appears destined to land another significant aviation business as an avionics company located in Griffin has expressed interest in moving to Peachtree City.

The city's Airport Authority agreed last week to give Gardner Aviation free rent for the first year and a discount on rent for what would become the auto parking area of the business. The authority, which charges tenants 45 cents a square foot for area used for aviation purposes, will allow the price to drop to 25 cents per square foot for the parking area.

The discount will cost the authority approximately $2,725 a year after the first year of free rent, said Airport Manager Jim Savage. But hopes are that Gardner's locating at Falcon Field will bring some "buzz" and attract other aviation businesses to Falcon Field, said authority chairwoman Cathy Nelmes.

"I think that business is worth $200 a month and I think it will bring more business in," said authority member Jerry Cobb. "It's about bringing other things to this airport."

The break on Gardner's lease will make it easier for the company to get its business started in Peachtree City, Nelmes said. The authority also agreed to allow the lease to run for 30 years instead of the normal 25 year period.

Gardner Aviation would be located at the airport's new hangar area which has been set aside by the authority for commercial aviation businesses. The business will take up two of the six lots available at the property. Another potential tenant has placed a deposit on one of the remaining four lots, but no decision has been made as to what type of aviation business will be located there.

New authority member Jim Toombs said he appreciated the authority discussing the matter in public rather than in closed session to avoid "rumors and innuendo."
