Starr's Mill wins county swim meet once again Starr's Mill won the Fayette County High School Swimming Championships for the third consecutive year. The meet took place last Friday at the Southeast Natatorium in Atlanta. Starr's Mill's girls finished first with 200 points, while McIntosh's girls were second with 118, Fayette County third with 107 points and Sandy Creek in fourth place with 88 points. On the boys side, the Panthers finished first with 157 points just edging out the Chiefs who placed second with 147. Sandy Creek was third with 108 points and Fayette County finished fourth with 97 points. The competition was good from all four schools, with all teams having state qualifying swims. Starr's Mill broke three county records and added a new qualifying swim for the state meet. Junior Brittany Stevens set a new county record in the 50 yard freestyle (25.66) and broke the county record she set last year in the 100 yard butterfly (59.12). Senior Kenny Jubb also broke a county record in the 50 free (22.90). All three times are state qualifying times. Freshman Mackenzie Garrott swam a new state qualifying time in the 100 yard free (57.25). Other individual first place finishes with a state qualifying time were Jubb, 50 free (50.06); Garrot, 100 breaststroke (1:13.42) and sophomore Noah Copeland, 200 free (1:55.06) and 500 free (5:19.16). Freshman Georgia Highsmith swam a state qualifying time in the 100 backstroke placing second (1:04.36) and was first in the 200 individual medley (2:26.35). Other first place individual winners were freshman Heather Highsmith, 200 free (2:13.09) and 500 free (5:56.24) and senior Josh Strickland in the 100 butterfly (1:02.43). Second place individual swimmers were sophomore Katie Ham, 200 free (2:17.76) and 500 free (6:12.28) and junior Haynes Finney, 100 butterfly (1:04.88) and 100 back (1:06.28). Third place individual swimmers were senior Samantha Hudson, 50 free (27.88) and 100 free (1:02.65); sophomore Kris Pretzer, 100 free (58.33); Strickland, 200 I.M.(2:22.53); junior Dustin Martin, 500 free (6:11.89); freshman Scott Adams, 100 back (1:08.44); senior Chris Frederick, 100 breaststroke (1:11.90) and senior Laurel Surratt, 100 breaststroke (1:19.19). All Starr's Mill girls relays placed first and had state cut times. The 200 yard medley relay team of G. Highsmith, Garrot, Stevens and Hudson had a time of 1:59.96, just missing the county record by less than a second. The 200 free relay team of Garrot, junior Libby Hardison, senior Brittney Wester and Hudson swam a 1:52.96. H. Highsmith, Hardison, G. Highsmith and Stevens also placed first in the 400 free relay (4:09.15). The Starr's Mill boys team of Adams, Frederick, Strickland and Jubb placed second in the 200 medley relay (1:51.28) which is a state qualifying time. Martin, senior Josh Jiricek, senior Michael Schroder and Adams were second in the 400 free relay (4:10.02). Pretzer, senior Jared Siri, Frederick and Copeland placed third in the 200 free relay (1:44.02). Coach J.B. Campbell stated that he was happy with the effort of all his swimmers as it took the entire team to make a difference in the outcome of the meet. Starr's Mill is next preparing for the 5-A Georgia High School State Swimming Championships which will be held at Westminster on Feb. 13 and 15. Campbell will be taking five individual qualifyers to the state meet and all relay teams.
