St. Gabriel Catholic church announces award winners

A Fayette County High School senior and a grandmother who doubles as a wife and mother have been chosen "Teen of the Year" and "Woman of the Year," respectively, by the Catholic Church of St. Gabriel in Fayetteville.

Chris Soto, son of Patsy and Rick Soto of Fayetteville, was announced as Teen of the Year recently by Jennifer Hazelton, St. Gabriel's youth minister, and Fr. Jimmy Adams, pastor.

Mary Lou Mazure, wife of Lou Mazure, mother of Paul, Colleen and Nathan, and grandmother of three, was voted Woman of the Year by the St. Gabriel Women's Guild at its recent meeting.

Soto says he plans to pursue a career in aviation, following in the footsteps of his father, a Delta pilot. Soto already has been accepted at several colleges.

"Chris has always been a faithful and active teen in our youth group," said Hazelton. "He has always been open to what God has in store for him. He is friendly to everyone."

Mazure, originally from Pennsylvania, has lived in the area since 1972 and says she now calls Fayetteville "home." She and her husband have been married 23 years. Their son, Paul, is a Captain in the U.S. Army, their daughter, Colleen, is a student at Georgia State, and their son Nathan is an eighth grader at Fayette Middle School.

Mazure is active in a number of ministries at St. Gabriel's, where she has been a member since 1989. She has been involved in adult education for the past 25 years and presently is the adult education coordinator at St. Gabriel's.

Along with her teaching, Mazure enjoys music, and sings at several services at church, as well as at local nursing homes. She also is a Fayette Senior Services volunteer and delivers Meals on Wheels to homebound senior citizens.

The recipients of the yearly awards will be honored at a Mass sponsored by the Atlanta Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women on Feb. 22. Atlanta Archbishop John F. Donoghue will celebrate the Mass at the Catholic Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta.
