Both French pianist Helene Grimaud and Swiss/French flutist Emmanuel Pahud have played at Spivey Hall before, but the pleasure is doubled on Friday, Jan. 31 at 8:15 p.m., when these two musicians take the stage together.

Pahud and Grimaud will perform Mozart's Sonata in B-flat Major, K. 378, Schumann's Sonata in A minor, Op. 105, Poulenc's Sonata, and Brahms' Sonata No. 2 in E-flat Major, Op. 120.

Grimaud burst onto the international music scene eleven years ago and has since become a regular visitor to the world's finest concert halls. When not playing piano, Grimaud pursues an offbeat hobby raising wolves at her Westchester County, New York home. She studied animal behavior for two years in order to become certified to welcome two adult wolves and two cubs into her life. Her aim is twofold: to show people that wolves are highly socialized animals that don't deserve their savage reputation, and to provide opportunities for scientific study. She frequently welcomes veterinarians and biologists into her suburban enclosure.

Pahud, meanwhile, has been in the classical spotlight since at the age of 22, he was appointed Principal Flute of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Claudio Abbado. He was named "Instrumentalist of the Year 1997" at the prestigious Victoires de la Musique Award ceremony in Paris and has won first prize in many major competitions.

Tickets for the Helen Grimaud and Emmanuel Pahud performance are $35.

On Saturday, Feb. 1, the Jimmy McGriff Quartet will play their brand of soul jazz with special guest saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman. McGriff played with Ray Charles in the late 1950s before recording some of his own classic works. The show will begin at 8:15 p.m. and tickets are $30. Other performances coming to Spivey Hall in February include the Shorter College Chorale on Saturday, Feb. 8 for $15, a free concert by saxophonist William Graves and pianist Michiko Otaki on Wednesday, Feb. 12 and performances of the CCSU Opera on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21 and 22 for $10.
