By MICHAEL BOYLAN

Alice Childress is one of the best known African-American playwrights and novelists. Her play, "Trouble in Mind," which won the Obie Award in 1956 and was the first play written by an African-American woman to be professionally produced on Broadway, will be produced professionally in Atlanta for the first time at Actor's Express through March 8.

"Trouble in Mind" deals with Wiletta Mayer, a successful actress whose new role provokes a revolution in her mind and forces her to choose between her career and her conscience. Carol Mitchell-Leon will play the role of Mayer in this rarely produced comedy-drama.

Childress is perhaps best known for her works as a novelist, with her best known work being "A Hero Ain't Nothing But a Sandwich." Childress wrote nine plays including "Trouble in Mind," but dedicated much of her later career to writing novels. Other novels written by Childress include "A Short Walk," "Rainbow Jordan" and "Those Other People."

"Trouble in Mind" will be performed Thursdays-Saturdays at 8 p.m., at 5 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 16 and 23 and at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 9 and March 2. Tickets are $20 for performances on Thursday, Friday and Sunday and $25 on Saturdays. Discounts are available for students, seniors and groups. Phone 404-607-SHOW or visit www.actorsexpress.com for reservations.
