Starr's Mill swimmers defeat Fayette County, prepare for county meet Starr's Mill had a big win over Fayette in the pool on Jan. 24 at the Kedron Aquatic Center. The Panthers placed first in all but three events out of 24. The girls team finished with 176 points to Fayette's 95, while the boys had 161 to the Tigers' 94. Ten Panther swimmers finished with at least one individual first place finish. Senior Kenny Jubb added two more events to his state qualifying times. He placed first in both the 200 individual medley (2:08.82) and the 100 butterfly (57.59). Other first place finishers were senior Josh Jiricek, 100 free (1:03.57), senior Samantha Hudson, 100 free (1:04.70), senior Chris Frederick, 100 breast (1:11.15, two seconds from a state qualifying time), junior Brittany Stevens, 100 butterfly (1:02.03), junior Jamie Grace, 200 free (2:29.89), sophomore Noah Copeland, 200 free (1:58.79) and 500 free (5:13.89), freshman MacKenzie Garrot, 500 free (5:53.72) and 100 breaststroke (1:15.05), freshman Georgia Highsmith, 200 individual medley (2:33.21) and 100 backstroke (1:08.25) and freshman Scott Adams, 100 backstroke (1:09.85). Panther swimmers with at least one individual second or third place finish include Dustin Martin, Paul Daniel, Lauren Smith, Laurel Surratt, Daniel Baily, Katie Ham, Michael Schroder, Libby Hardison, Britney Wester and Bradley Morris. The Panther relay teams continue to look strong. Starr's Mill won all but one relay event. The boys relay team of Copeland, Frederick, Jubb and Jiricek won with a time of 1:55.48 in the 200 medley relay while the 400 free relay team of Copeland, Daniel, Adams and Jubb finished with 3:48.91. Starr's Mill girls relay teams swept all three events. The 200 medley relay team of Highsmith, Garrot, Stevens and Hudson swam a state qualifying time of 2:03.12. Hudson, Surratt, Hardison and Stevens won the 200 free relay (1:55.74) while Wester, Ham, Highsmith and Stevens also swam a state qualifying time in the 400 free relay (4:09.32). The Panthers are gearing up for the Fayette County Swimming Championships taking place this Friday at the Southeastern Natatorium on Cleveland Avenue. Coach J.B. Campbell is hoping to win the county title for the third year in a row and to qualify more swimmers for the Georgia High School State Swimming Championships in February. Five Panther swimmers have qualified to date for individual events will be swam.
