Basketball teams battle with region opponents

Local basketball teams are now seeing some of their region opponents for the second time this season. Sometimes the results are better than the first meeting and other times they aren't.

Fayette County's boys struggled in thir first game with Carver this season, but the Tigers exacted revenge on Friday night with a 60-43 win. After starting off with an offensive explosion they built an 18-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Tigers had a 10 point lead at the half but got bogged down a bit in the third as Carver cut the lead to 39-33. The Tigers had another big quarter at the end to seal the win.

Ryan Fielding had 14 points, while Dexter Manley recorded a double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling in 10 rebounds.

The Lady Tigers were not as fortunate. They had a 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter but trailed carver 30-22 at the half. Carver outscored the Lady Tigers 17-6 in the third and despite a flurry of three pointers by Fayette County towrads the end of the game, hung on for the 64-47 win. Brooke Holt scored nine points for the Lady Tigers.

Fayette County faced East Coweta last night after the parer went to press and will host McIntosh in what should be an exciting rematch in both the boys and girls games on Friday night.

McIntosh's boys and girls lost close games to East Coweta on Saturday. The Lady Chiefs fell 55-52, while the boys lost 37-36. The Lady Chiefs had a 34-27 lead at the half but were outrebounded and put the Lady Indians on the foul line. Lindsay Murphy scored 26 points for the Lady Chiefs.

McIntosh hosted Newnan last night and will play at Fayette County on Friday.

Sandy Creek's boys and girls had two tough matches this weekend. On Friday, the boys lost to Pebblebrook 84-69, while the girls lost 61-48. Kevin Craig led the boys with 17 points, while Mary fields led the girls with 14 points. On Saturday, the Lady Patriots rebounded with a 45-33 win with Fields scoring 16 points, while the boys lost in the last second 61-59 with Aaron Caruthers scoring 14 points.

Sandy Creek hosted North Clayton last night and will host Woodward Academy on Friday before traveling to Alexander on Saturday.

Starr's Mill's boys got a big win on Friday as they defeated Riverdale 54-44. The Panthers had an 11-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and found themselves tied at 21 at halftime. They put together an 10-0 run at the beginning of the third quarter and never let Riverdale get closer than seven points.

"The team played really well together," said Coach Carl Thomas. 'They're playing some of their best ball of the season right now."

Mike Mock led the team in scoring with 17 points, while Andy drum added 11. Thomas cited the play of Caleb Graham, who scored eight points, pulled in 12 rebounds, blocked two shots, stole the ball twice and had two deflections.

The Starr's Mill girls lost to Riverdale 58-42. Riverdale jumped out to a 19-5 lead in the first quarter and then outscored the Lady Panthers 17-9 in the third quarter. Starr's Mill played well in the second and fourth quarters but made a lot of turnovers that led to easy baskets for Riverdale. Ashley Marine led Starr's Mill in scoring with 10 points while Erin Houghtaling played good defense, created some steals and worked hard for the Lady Panthers. Starr's Mill played at Mundy's Mill last night and will host Carver, Columbus on Friday.
