Local wrestlers perform well in weekend meets

While Rising Starr was hosting the MMSAL Championships, Starr's Mill was hosting the Panther Duals. The Panthers placed second in the meet, losing to Parkview in the championship round. McIntosh's wrestling team placed seventh in the meet, while Sandy Creek placed ninth.

In the first round of the meet Starr's Mill defeated Cass 66-6 and McIntosh defeated Winder-Barrow 52-28, while Sandy Creek fell to Westminister 55-12. In round two, Starr's Mill beat Rockdale County 57-15, while Cass defeated Sandy Creek 57-15 and Henry County beat McIntosh 69-12. Round three saw Sandy Creek lose to Rockdale County 59-12, while McIntosh was edged out by LaGrange 48-36. Starr's Mill defeated Sandy Creek 75-3 in round four while Parkview beat McIntosh 71-6. In round five Starr's Mill beat Westminister 39-23.

The championship round saw Parkview beat Starr's Mill 34-25. Winners for Starr's Mill in the championship match were Corey Radcliffe (103), Mike Cosper (125), Tyler Kourajian (130), Davey Woods (135), Nick Bennett (152) and Andy Smith (275). McIntosh faced Cass for the battle of seventh place and won 40-36.

Starr's Mill, McIntosh and Sandy Creek will meet up again this Saturday at the area duals, which will take place at Starr's Mill at 9:30 a.m. Fayette County will also enter the mix at the meet on Saturday.

Fayette County's wrestlers finished tied for second at the Central-Carrollton Tournament. Troup County was first with 207.5 points, while Fayette County and East Paulding were second with 205 pts.

Fayette County had three champions in their weight class: Nick Foster (160), Will Barnes (189), Drake McCoy (275). This was Foster's first tournament championship, while Barnes was the defending champion at the tournament. McCoy captured his fourth tournament championship of the year with his wins over the weekend. Placing second for the Tigers was Joe Strickland (171), while Matt Kellerman (130), Stephen McElrath (135), Thomas Lowery (103) and Patrick Kellerman (145) placed third. Zach Stanley (140) placed fifth.

"We wrestled well," said Coach Jim Bailey. "We were missing three starters from the lineup and it was a tough tournament with lots of competition."

The Tigers hosted Westminster and Northgate last night.

The Landmark Christian School varsity wrestling team finished third in the recent Bowdon tournament. They scored 152 pts beating Northgate, Chapel Hill, Tri-Cities, Callaway, Armuchee, Temple, Sandy Creek, Bowdon, Mt. Zion, Heard Co. and Our Lady of Mercy.

Jeremy Smith (189) and Jeremy Brown (140) were champions of their weight class. Brown's final match was considered the best match of the tournament. Placing second was Wren Gibby (130), while Ethan Everett (160), Eddie Solly (171) and Nick Taussig (215) placed third and John Houston (152) placed fourth.

Last Thursday evening, Landmark Christian School set a school record by not losing a match against Greater Atlanta Christian and Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School. Landmark gave GAC 6 pts because of a forfeit but defeated them 63-6. Our Lady of Mercy was defeated 84-0. It was senior night and all of the seniors on the squad ended the home wrestling careers with pins. Seniors on the team are Smith, Brown, Everett, Solly, Gibby, Houston, and Andy Hutson.
