The sequins sparkled and the flash bulbs popped Saturday night as Fayette's business community gathered to celebrate the past year's successes.

Several hundred folks dressed in their finest and headed to the Wyndham in Peachtree City to honor Fayette's business community at the Fayette Chamber of Commerce's annual banquet.

One of the highlights of the event is the presentation of the Outstanding Business Person of the Year, which went to Group VI senior vice president Tate Godfrey. In announcing the award, Steve Black said people in the business community described Godfrey as "a very well-respected person," "very detailed," and "a first-class person."

Black explained he brought Godfrey to Fayette County when he hired him at Peachtree City Development Corporation in 1993.

During his tenure in the county, Godfrey has served as the chairman of the chamber and as a member of the Development Authority of Peachtree City.

The chamber also awarded Jim Mothorpe with its Ambassador of the Year award and Andy Carden as the winner of the Chet Wells Service Award. The service award goes to a chamber member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty and works as an advocate for the community.

Before the awards were presented, Fayette County Superior Judge Paschal English regaled the audience with tales of his adventures on the "Survivor" television series.

English said the experience made him reevaluate his life and discover his true self.

When everything is stripped way and you live on 200 calories a day, English said you gain a new perspective on life.

Without question, he added, the show was the toughest thing he's ever done in his life, but it was also one of the most meaningful experiences.
