Swim teams get wins, meet again tomorrow

The McIntosh Chiefs and Lady Chiefs both scored wins in a dual swim meet against Fayette County High School last Friday at the Kedron Aquatic Center. The boys won 160-109 and the girls won 156-120.

The following Lady Chiefs achieved first-place finishes: Schaefer Abercrombie, 200 free (2:32.99); Tiffany Grant, 50 free (28.27); Lindsey Lochridge, 500 free (6:21) and 100 breast (1:18.43); and Julie White, 10 back (1:13.56).

First place winners for the Chiefs were Chris Lee, 200 IM (2:18.19); Thomas Lucak, 100 butterfly (59.14) and 100 back (1:01.36); Robert Hawkins, 500 free (6:52.88) and Chris Koperniak, 100 breast (1:09.59). Two relay teams also finished first: the 200 yard medley relay team of Lucak, Koperniak, Lee and Jeb Beard (1;51.89) and the 400 yard free relay team of Koperniak, Lucak, lee and riki Otaki (3:54.00).

"This was a hard fought meet with several very close races," said Coach Tommy Stockdale. "I'm happy to have both teams bring home a win this week."

McIntosh will take on Sandy Creek and Lovejoy this afternoon and will travel to Athens for the Athens-Oconee Invitational tomorrow.

The Starr's Mill Panther swim team traveled to Woodward Academy on Jan. 14 to battle it out in the pool. Starr's Mill lost to Woodward with the girls team gathering 121 points to Woodward's 179, and the boys team finishing with 100 points to Woodward's 176.

Even though several key swimmers were absent due to illness, the team carried on and had some good swims.

Coach J.B. Campbell reported that freshman Georgia Highsmith made a state qualifying time in the 100 yard backstroke (1:05.95). She joins four other individual qualifiers from the Panther team heading to the Georgia High School State Championships in February. Highsmith also was second in the 200 IM. Junior Britttany Stevens won the 100 butterfly and improved her state qualifying time (1:00.43). She also placed first in the 50 free (26.06).

Freshman Mackensie Garrot was first in the 200 IM (2:26.96) and second in the 100 breastroke(1:13.64). Freshman Heather Highsmith won the 500 free (6:12.87) and freshman Katie Ham placed second in the same event (6:14.90).

In the girls relay events G. Highsmith, Garrot, Stevens and senior Samantha Hudson placed second in the 200 medley relay (2:00.72). Garrot, Hudson, senior Laurel Surratt and Stevens were second in the 200 free relay (1:51.90). For the boys team Starrs Mill finished first through third in both the 100 backstroke and the 100 breaststroke. Freshman Scott Adams was first in the 100 back (1:09.06), junior Paul Daniel second (1:14.32) and senior Joshua Jiricek third (1:22.13). The winner of the 100 breast was Chris Frederick (1:12.40), senior Jared Siri second (1:17.24) and sophomore Bradley Morris third (1:27.45).

Senior Josh Strickland was second in the 100 butterfly (1:03.24) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:22.60). Freshman Michael Burmeister finished fourth in the 200 free (2:09.56). The boys 400 free relay team of Frederick, sophomore Kris Pretzer, junior Haynes Finney and Strickland placed first with a time of 4:00.56.

Coach Campbell hopes to qualify more swimmers this coming Saturday for the state meet when the Panthers travel to Athens for the Oconee Invitational held at UGA.
