Wrestling teams keep busy, prepare for county duals meet

The Starr's Mill wrestling team participated in the Hoover Invitational in Alabama last weekend and finished in second place. Hoover won the meet and Vestavia Hills High School, defending champs and a perennial powerhouse in Alabama placed third.

Matches began on Friday and all of Starr's Mill's 14 wrestlers qualified for Saturday's portion of the tournament. Those wrestlers going undefeated on Friday were Tyler Kourajian (130), David Woods (135), Nick Bennett (152), Kyle Verzello (160), Jordan Powers (171) and Andy Smith (Heavyweight).

In Saturday's action, 10 of Starr's Mill's wrestlers placed in the top six. Kourajian and Michael Cosper (125) placed second, while Bennett, Powers and Smith placed third. Fourth place finishers for Starr's Mill were Woods and Verzello, while Scott Molleson (145) placed fifth and Bruce Ferguson (119) and Bradley Conner (215) placed sixth.

The Panthers will wrestle this weekend in the Carpet Classic in Dalton, Ga.

Fayette County's wrestling team placed fifth in the Fayette County Christmas Classic behind parkview, Troup County, Starr's Mill and Pope. The Tigers had eight wrestlers place in the top six of their weight class.

Drake McCoy (275) placed second, while Thomas Lowery (103) placed third. Will Barnes (189), Colin Evans (140) and Patrick Kellerman (152) placed fourth, while Matt Kellerman (130) placed fifth and Chris Leslie (215) placed sixth.

Fayette County will wrestle in the Christian Brothers Invitational in Memphis, Tenn. on Saturday.
