Newnan girls soccer team recognized by National Soccer Coaches

The Newnan Lady Cougars were among 186 women's soccer teams recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Assocation of America as 2002 NSCAA Team Academic Award recipients. The team's overall GPA, compiled from their 18 player state playoff roster in the 2001-2002 school year, was 3.69 and tied the Lady Cougars with three other schools for 41st in the nation.

Only Lakeside (Dekalb), Walton, and Oconee County had a higher overall team GPA in Georgia from the 186 recognized. To qualify, a team must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and be nominated by an NSCAA member coach. Each team will be recognized during the NSCAA/adidas High School Coaches Breakfast Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, as part of the 2003 NSCAA Convention held Jan. 15-19, 2003, in Kansas City, Mo. This marks the third consecutive year the Lady Cougars have received this honor.

The Lady Cougars also had three players qualify for individual recognition. Emily Asher, Stephanie Deason, and Lanie Scott were each selected for the NSCAA and adidas High School Scholar All South Region for their outstanding academic records and soccer achievements through their junior year. These ladies follow graduate Tiffany Sellen as the only Coweta soccer players so honored to date. They will begin their final season in Newnan colors on Feb. 21 against McEachern at Drake Stadium.
