Plan for firebreaks now

The Georgia Forestry Commission advises that it is time to start thinking about pre-suppression firebreaks for fall and winter fire season. The GFC is available to help assist you with this type of project by plowing the necessary firebreaks that are required before any burning off of woodlands or open areas. GFC personnel are also available to "stand by" during a burning operation to insure fire safety, at no charge. Firebreaks to be installed should be scheduled in late-October and November after leaf fall.

The advantages that firebreaks provide include the reduction of wildfire danger, access, travel lanes for wildlife and the firebreaks will last until next season. Firebreaks are scheduled on a first-come, first-serve basis for a nominal charge.

Firebreaks can also be installed with a harrow now assigned to many GFC units. This harrow is ideal for young pine plantations and is good for plantations that have been plowed many times in the past. Areas that have had the same firebreaks re-plowed for many years are encouraged to sign up for the use of this harrow for more environmentally friendly firebreaks. The GFC also offers plowing of food plots for wildlife. Acreage for food plots must be clear of stumps and large debris.

For more information or assistance with firebreak plowing, burning assistance or food plots contact your county GFC office at 770-227-5522 or 770-358-1459.
