Newnan Community Theatre presents a twisted version of a holiday classic

As Georgia Youth Ballet members prepare for their seventh annual production of "The Nutcracker" at The Studio in Fayetteville, sightings abound of a large number of elaborately attired creatures, people and objects. Child-sized snowflakes, candy canes, dolls, tea leaves, and flowers are seemingly everywhere. These objects are mingling with an international potpourri of Russians, Arabians, Spanish, and Chinese, who are themselves beset by a host of mice led by their Rat King.

There is no need to worry, though, because the whole menagerie is overseen by angels.

Performing in her first Nutcracker is McKensie Parks of Peachtree City, 4, who is appearing as an angel. She also has the role of Crown Page.

"I get to wear a beautiful costume!" said Parks about dancing as an angel. "And I get to give the Nutcracker to the Sugar Plum Fairy. That's my favorite part."

Parks joins 100 other young people who have been rehearsing since September to put on the annual holiday classic.

Under the direction of artistic director Magdalena Maury and co-director Jonsie Pollock, Georgia Youth Ballet will perform "The Nutcracker" Dec. 6-8 at Our Lady of Mercy High School in Fayetteville. Tickets are on sale now. For more information call The Studio at 770-716-9858.
