Students decorate boxes for good cause

The Student Council at Rising Starr Middle School sponsored a Thanksgiving Food Drive Nov. 4-18. Food was collected by homeroom and each class was asked to decorate a box with a Thanksgiving theme. This year's winners for best decorated box were (sixth-grade homeroom) Suzanne Quattlebaum, (seventh-grade homeroom) Amy Maddox and (eighth-grade homeroom) Julie Gray. The overall school winner was the seventh-grade homeroom of Greg Parsons.

Honorable Mention winners include (sixth grade) Robin Scherer, Kimber McDermid and John Lawler, (seventh grade) Robert Duncan, Richard Cookson and Amy Furbee and (eighth grade) Beth Gaskins and Cathy Nix.

The students and staff brought in a total of 5,932 food items. The food was donated to a local food bank and will be distributed to Fayette County families.

Rising Starr Middle will sponsor two more holiday service projects. The Student Council will collect socks, hats, and mittens in all sizes Dec. 2-16 to take to a local shelter. The school's CARE (Children at Risk in Education) Team will hold a Toys for Tots drive Dec. 2-14.

All items will be collected in homeroom. Anyone wishing to make donations can bring them to the front office from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on school days.
