Grumbling increases over Dunn leadership

It looks as if the election of a chairman for the Fayette County Commission could be interesting this January.

During last week's retreat, members of the board questioned the specific duties of the chairman.

Commissioners A.G. VanLandingham and Herb Frady said they should be getting the information that Chairman Greg Dunn gets about matters he negotiates with the Atlanta Regional Commission.

They said Dunn is working on behalf of the board and should consult his fellow commissioners on important issues.

"You get the same information I get from the ARC. I figure if it was an important issue, you would call me about it," Dunn said.

Dunn also added that in extremely important issues, he brings representatives to Fayette County to talk to the commission. He alluded to the issue of express buses proposed by the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority and said he had GRTA reps at two meetings.

"Are you (VanLandingham) and Herb thinking I overextend my authority?" questioned Dunn.

"We just need to be informed," said VanLandingham.

VanLandingham also alluded to meetings that Dunn held with other ARC officials outside of the regular meetings and needed to know what Dunn was negotiating for the county.

Dunn said he merely prepares a lot for his job, and believes the chairman has to spend a lot of time in the office researching different issues.

He said he's had several discussions with county administrator Chris Cofty, but said he has never directed Cofty to do anything.

"I have to ask him a lot of questions during my research for various items that come before the board," he said.
