H.S. Hoops season underway

The basketball season has begun and play between the local teams suggests this will be a competitive season for all.

Fayette County's boys opened the season with an 82-80 loss to Sandy Creek. The Patriots led 20-18 at the end of the first quarter but Fayette led at the end of the following two quarters, at one point pushing their lead to seven points. Sandy Creek triumphed though with four players reaching double figures. Aaron Caruthers scored 24 points, Kerry Atkinson netted 14 points, Kevin Craig scored 12 points and Cornelius Brown added 10 points.

Fayette County then sent their boys and girls to take on East Coweta. the boys team won 57-53 in overtime, while the girls fell to the Lady Indians 61-55. East Coweta's girls had a 34-19 lead at the half and had just enough to hold Fayette County at bay at the end of the game. East Coweta was led by megan Darrah's 14 points, while Fayette County was led by Stephanie Norman's 21 points.

The East Coweta boys rallied to push the game into overtime but could not hang on. East coweta's leading scorer was Wes Carmichael, who finished with 15 points, while Fayette's Dexter Manley finished with 24 points.

East Coweta will play at Northgate on Saturday at 6 p.m., while Sandy Creek's boys and girls will play in the Morrow High School Thanksgiving Tournament. The Lady Patriots will play on Monday, Nov. 25th, while the boys will face top ranked Creekside at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Fayette County will play in the Mt. Zion Thanksgiving Tournament, along with McIntosh. The tournament starts on Saturday, Nov. 23 and continues through Nov. 30. Our Lady of mercy will play at Greenforest tonight at 6:30 p.m. and will host W.D. Muhammad at 6:30 on Saturday. Starr's Mill will host Eagle's Landing at 6 p.m. tomorrow and will play at Carver at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
