County prepares to seek bids for dredging Lake Peachtree By JOHN
MUNFORD The Fayette County Water System's plans to dredge Lake Peachtree can move forward now that Peachtree City has agreed to an easement that will allow the use of Drake Field as a staging area. The county has not yet put the project out for bid but is likely to consider the matter at an upcoming meeting. County consulting engineer Jim Mallett said the county will seek bids that allow contractors to propose a particular dredging method along with the cost for the work. Depending on the type of dredging method selected, there may not be a need to use Drake Field to stage the dredging equipment, Mallett said. "We're going to tell them, if you need an area, we have it," Mallett told the county's water committee at its regular meeting Wednesday morning. To avoid having the equipment access Drake Field from nearby City Hall, the county will pave a road from an existing curb cut on Ga. Highway 54 closer to the lake. The Georgia Department of Transportation has already approved that portion of the project, Mallett said. Estimates call for approximately 22,000 cubic yards of sediment to be removed from the lake, which is owned by Peachtree City. The county water system uses Lake Peachtree as a reservoir through a special agreement which requires the county to periodically perform the dredging activities.
