PTC planners looking into gas stations at local grocery stores By JOHN
MUNFORD With some metro Atlanta grocery store chains adding gas stations to their offerings, Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown has asked the city's Planning Commission to see if that could happen here. Kroger, which has three stores in Peachtree City already, has already opened gas stations at some metro area stores. Elsewhere, Publix has done the same. But neither company has indicated they wish to build a gas station at their stores in Peachtree City. The commission discussed the matter briefly at its regular meeting Monday night. City Planner David Rast said Brown wanted the planning commission to look into the matter. Rast said that the city recently approved a drive-up emissions building in the parking lot of the Peachtree Crossing shopping center. That building, however, was replacing a kiosk that had been vacant for some time, Rast noted. The new open-air emissions building is relatively small with room for one or two vehicles. A gas station, however, would take up a significant amount of room in a parking lot, Rast noted. "Certainly a gasoline canopy is more intensive," Rast said, adding that he has heard Kroger plans to build a gas station at its Banks Crossing location in Fayetteville. Commissioner Wes Saunders said the Kroger near where he works in Decatur has a gas station which is convenient for him to use. But the shopping center it is located in is rather large compared to the Kroger locations in Peachtree City, Saunders said. All of the village retail centers are zoned general commercial, but if the local grocery stores plan to put in a gas station, the structure would be reviewed through the city's typical process, Rast said. Rast said he would research the matter and report back to the commission at a later date.
