Offshoot Productions celebrates works of Beatrix Potter by telling some of her tales By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
Beatrix Potter loved animals, which is why the majority of her stories involved them. Though best known for "The Tale of Peter Rabbit," Potter also wrote stories about squirrels, hedgehogs, ducks, pigs and kittens. Offshoot Productions will bring some of these tales to life with their production of "Tales of Beatrix Potter." The cast is mostly made up of apprentices, but there are two guest artists, Ben and Lesley Howe, rounding out the cast. The Howes are a married couple that recently relocated to Fayette County. They both have theatre degrees from Harding University. Apprentices in the show are Vanessa Meglich, Rachel K. Quick, Brittney Sovik, Cyndi Waite (a returning apprentice who appeared in Offshoot's A Midsummer Night's Dream) and Caitlin Wilbor. The apprentices took part in three intensive workshops to prepare for the production. Director Bettina Seay feels that they have come along way since being cast and are enjoying the process of creating a variety of characters. "Tales From Beatrix Potter" is definitely a show for children and their families. Children can either sit on a carpet near the front of the stage or at tables where they can enjoy a snack and a beverage. Youngsters will also be encouraged to participate alongside the actors at certain points during the show and everyone will be invited to join in a holiday sing-along led by Ben Howe after the play. "The show is geared towards children and gets them involved with the show in several different ways including having them make a rainstorm and singing with the characters on stage," said Seay, who people might know from her stint as Queen Anne Boleyn in the past two Georgia Renaissance Festivals. Tales from Beatrix Potter performances are Friday, November 15, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, November 16, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, November 17, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Saturday, November 23, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; and Sunday, November 24, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $6 in advance and $7 at the door. Advanced tickets may be purchased at the Peachtree City Library and the Fayette County Library. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Fayette Family YMCA Partner With Youth Scholarship Campaign. The YMCA is located at 215 Huiet Road, just off Ga. Hwy 54 between Peachtree City and Fayetteville. For additional information, call 770-631-2362 or send e-mail to offshootpr@aol.com. |
