Games importance increases as season nears end

The regular season will end for several teams tonight and many of those teams will be looking to finish on a positive note. Several other local teams, most notably Starr's Mill, Landmark Christian and Sandy Creek, will most likely have a longer season by going to the state playoffs.

In what is likely to become a yearly tradition, Starr's Mill (7-2) will take on Fayette County (2-7) for "The Rock" trophy. There have been lots of events this week leading up to the game and afterwards a concert will be held at the Villages Amphitheater. Both the Tigers and Panthers have had a bye week leading up to this match, so both teams should be well rested and ready to play. A win for Starr's Mill seals a region championship, while a Tiger win assures Fayette County of a year of bragging rights.

The Panthers have to be the favorites in the game as they have a great running game and a stingy defense. Fayette County has hung in there in most of their games this year and could present a problem for Starr's Mill if the score is close late. The game will take place at Tiger Stadium.

East Coweta (4-5) hopes to get break even this season with a win over their rival, the Newnan Cougars (4-5). Both teams are in an unfamiliar position going into this game as one or both of them is typically jockeying for postseason position at this time of year. East Coweta has gone 4-2 in their last six games and defeated Starr's Mill during that time. Newnan has lost four games in a row. Both teams will be fighting with all they have as neither wants to finish the season with a losing record.

Sandy Creek (6-2) will have one more game after tonight's home game against Pebblebrook (5-3). The Patriots are in second place in the region behind Douglas County and they would like to keep it that way. The Patriots showed lots of heart last week coming back from a 21-0 deficit to beat Woodward Academy 28-21 in overtime. If they use that tremendous win to stay focused they should defeat Pebblebrook and go into their road game at Northgate next week with a 7-2 record and a hold on runner-up in the region.

Landmark Christian (8-0) has a game against Mt. Zion, Carroll next week but tonight they host Our Lady of Mercy. The Bobcats (2-7) have dealt with many injuries while playing in their first full varsity season. According to Coach Alan Gordon, Ralph Woolfolk may see some time at quarterback tonight for Our Lady of Mercy but wil most likely not play defense. Landmark Christian has steamrolled nearly all of their opponents this season and may be too much for the Bobcats to handle tonight.

All kickoffs are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
