Considering the last two games that Fayette County and Starr's Mill played against each other went to extra innings, it should come as no surprise that the two teams are on track to meet again in the state tournament. As long as they keep winning.

Both teams got three wins in the opening round of the state tournament in Valdosta last weekend. Starr's Mill defeated Valdosta 4-0, Jonesboro 4-0 and Eagle's Landing 5-1 and Fayette County beat Lee County 2-0, Henry County 3-0 and Stockbridge 4-0.

Rebecca Guertin was the Lady Panthers winning pitcher in their game against Valdosta, giving up two hits and striking out nine, while Brittany Matthews recorded the next two wins, giving up a combined seven hits and striking out seven.

Matthews also drove in three runs over the weekend, while Lynsey Tedford drove in another two. Danielle Aszman stole four bases for Starr's Mill.

Fayette County had Stephanie Phillips pitch the opening game against Lee County, while Bonnie Bynum got the wins over Henry County and Stockbridge. Bynum threw a no-hitter against Stockbridge and struck out a combined 16 batters in the two wins. Becky Carder hit .500 for the weekend and scored two runs, while Ashley holcombe drove in two RBIs.

McIntosh was eliminated from the state tournament. They defeated Tift County 1-0 but lost to Eagle's Landing 2-0 and East Coweta 3-0.

The state tournament continues on Thursday at 4 p.m. when Fayette County plays Sequoyah and Starr's Mill takes on Oconee County. If the Lady Tigers win they will take on either Lassiter or Stockbridge at 8 p.m. If Starr's Mill wins they will face either Sprayberry or Lowndes at 8 p.m. Games will be played at the Columbus Softball Complex in Columbus, Ga.
