Football season heads in to final month

The local high school footbal teams are entering the final month of the regular season. Teams are either trying to stay the course and make their way to the state playoffs or play spoiler and thwart some team's chances of postseason glory.

One example of this is tonight's game featuring McIntosh (1-7) at Starr's Mill (6-2). The Panthers defeated Newnan 27-6 last week and looked good doing it. They got touchdowns from Johnny Edwards, Deante Battle and Chris Strauch and one can assume that all three players will be featured prominently again tonight. McIntosh has lost six games in a row, including last week's loss to Riverdale. The Chiefs have looked good at different points during the season but need to put a complete game together without making costly mistakes.

Fayette County (2-6) is in a similar position. The Tigers lost to Carver, Columbus last week and failed to score a touchdown. They would love to give Riverdale (5-1) another loss but will need to try and contain their offensive speed and beat their speed on defense. Riverdale has won three games in a row and has scored a total of 101 points in those games. The Raiders will be especially dangerous because they know they must win to keep any hope of winning the region alive. The game will be played at Tara Stadium in Jonesboro.

East Coweta (3-5) lost to Lovejoy 36-7 last week but had defeated Starr's Mill the week before. The question this week is which Indians team shows up tonight in their game against Carver, Columbus. The Tigers are 4-3 this season and beat Fayette County with a fourth quarter drive last week.

Sandy Creek (4-2) beat North Clayton 24-14 last week. They have benefitted all season from strong performances from tailback Phillip Hyde and receiver Calvin Johnson and should do well against Forest Park (2-4) if both play their typical games tonight. Excluding their loss to Douglas County two weeks ago and their first game of the year against Fayette County, the Patriot defense has only given up 40 points. Forest Park had a bye last week but lost to Northgate 29-28 the week before. The Patriots will try to improve their home record to 2-2 with a win tonight.

Our Lady of Mercy (2-5) will have their hands full with a home game against Bowdon (4-2) tonight. The Bobcats will probably be without starting quarterback Ralph Woolfolk tonight due to a sprained ankle and they will also be without their top receiver and backup quarterback Josh Flores for the rest of the year because of a broken collarbone. Freshman Brett Bartels is expected to get the start against Bowdon. Bowdon has won two games in a row and has averaged 38 points per game in the wins.

Landmark Christian has an excellent chance to go 7-0 as they travel to take on Whitefield Academy (1-6). The War Eagles are averaging 42.3 points per game and have only allowed 90 points all season, which is an average of 15 points per game. Landmark Christian has shown teams all season that they can win games on both offense and defense and it should be no different tonight.

All kickoffs are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. starts.
