National Forest Products Week October 20 - 26

The Georgia Forestry Commission is reminding Fayette County residents that this is National Forest Products Week, an observance that should have special meaning for Georgians. You need only to take a moment to look around you to see the many products we use and depend on each day that comes from wood and wood by-products.

Forestry is big business in Georgia. Timber is the highest valued crop in Georgia followed by vegetables, cotton, and peanuts. There is 23.9 million acres of commercial forest land in the state, 72 percent of which is privately owned. Georgia's forest industry contributes over $19.7 billion to the state's economy. The state's forest industry employs directly and indirectly 177,000 individuals.

Fayette County is home to nine wood-using industries producing cabinetry, furniture, lumber, firewood and providing approximately 80 jobs in the county.

The Georgia Forestry Commission produces the "Georgia Wood Using Industries and Forest Products Marketing Directory" which lists wood using industries in the state and the type of products produced. This directory serves as a reference guide to assist wood users of the state in marketing their products and locating suppliers. A copy of this directory can be viewed on the web at http://www.gfc.state.ga.us/Publications/Educational/WoodUtilization/index.cfm or obtained by calling 912-751-3523.

The Georgia Forestry Commission works each day toward helping secure the future resources needed for tomorrow's wood products, by working with landowners in wise and productive management of their woodlands. Planting trees on abandoned, unproductive lands is not only profitable for the landowner but also provides the resources needed for the future while securing jobs. The Georgia Forestry Commission can help you make the right decisions for managing your property. Call today for more information and free advice at 770-227-5522 or 770-358-1459.
