Fayetteville native wins scholarship

Sasha P. Smith, a senior at Oglethorpe University, has been selected to receive a $3,500 UPS scholarship. Smith is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Basil Smith of Fayetteville, Georgia, and a 1998 graduate of Lovejoy High School.

She is majoring in business administration and biology at Oglethorpe and has made the Dean's List almost every semester since starting at Oglethorpe. She maintains a 3.3 grade point average.

Smith is one of more than 665 UPS Scholars at private colleges and universities across the nation. These scholarships are funded annually by the UPS Educational Endowment Fund, which was established by the United Parcel Service at the Foundation for Independent Higher Education (FIHE) in Washington, D.C. FIHE administers the program in cooperation with it its Georgia partner, The Georgia Foundation for Independent Colleges.

This year, the UPS educational Endowment Fund distributed $2.3 million for its scholarship program, bringing the total amount of scholarships awarded to over $32 million. An additional $1.1 million in competitive grants were distributed from the fund last year to improve educational services for students and encourage collaboration among colleges.

In announcing the UPS Scholarships, Evern Cooper, president of The UPS Foundation said, "For nearly 50 years, The UPS Foundation has been honored to support education through partnerships with such organizations as FIHE and The Georgia Foundation for Independent Colleges. The availability of quality, affordable higher education at places like Oglethorpe University, is critical to establishing a talented, more diverse workforce."

Oglethorpe is a coeducational, largely residential college located in the heart of Brookhaven, just north of the Buckhead section of Atlanta. The University provides a superior education in the liberal arts and sciences and selected professional disciplines in a diverse community characterized by civility, caring, inquiry and tolerance.
