Oxendine presents winners of 2002 "Life, Fire and Safety Awards"

Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John W. Oxendine today announced the winners of the annual "Excellence in Fire Safety" awards, and the student winners of the statewide Fire Safety Poster and Essay contests.

Commissioner Oxendine presented the awards at the 2002 "Life, Fire, and Safety" Awards Luncheon in Atlanta. This annual event was held in conjunction with the observance of National Fire Prevention Week.

"Every year, we honor fire professionals and civilians who have made an effort to improve fire safety for all of us, and we honor those students who take fire safety seriously enough to teach others through creative art and writing," Commissioner Oxendine said. "I am honored this year to recognize these fine individuals who set such wonderful examples for all of us."

Winners of the "Excellence in Fire Safety" Awards were:

Firefighter of the Year: Capt. Jeffrey "Scott" Dorman, Houston County Fire Department.

Fire Official of the Year: Chief Becky Denlinger, Cobb County Fire & Emergency Svcs.

Fire Safety Educator of the Year: Lt. Carl DeMarco, City of Morrow Fire Department.

Fire Safety Prevention Program Award: Walker County Emergency Services.

Fire Investigator of the Year: Troy Reynolds, Safety Fire Commissioner's Office.

Citizen's Courage Award, age 18 and older: Nadine Bolton, Carlton.

Citizen's Courage Award, age 17 and younger: Rayvie Hall, Arnall Middle School, Newnan.

Special recognition was given to radio station 790 "The Zone," and to radio station Z93, both in Atlanta, in appreciation and recognition for their contribution and support to the fire service in the state of Georgia. Riverdale Fire Services received the 2002 Special Fire Service Program Award for the Citizens' Fire Academy conducted by the Riverdale Fire Department. Also, the Georgia State Firefighter's Association was recognized for raising more than $100,000 to aid firefighters and their families in New York, following the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Contestants in the poster and essays contests were required to reflect this year's theme, "Team Up for Fire Safety," in the entries they submitted.

First-place winners of the Fire Safety Poster Contest were:

Kindergarten: De'Landria Jackson, Thomas H. Slater Elementary School, Atlanta.

First grade: Glenda Allen, Emma Hutchinson Elementary School, Atlanta.

Second grade: Anna Heape, Pike County Primary School, Zebulon.

Third grade: Maria Callahan, Immaculate Heart of Mary School, Atlanta.

Fourth grade: Lauren Milner, Brooks Elementary School, Brooks.

Fifth grade: Medinah Mustafa, Thomas H. Slater Elementary School, Atlanta.

Winner of the Fire Safety House Essay Contest, open to all students from kindergarten to fifth grade, was Suanubarilee Bakor, a second grader from Stone Mill Elementary in Stone Mountain.

First-place winners of the Fire Safety Essay Contest were:

Sixth grade: Kaitlynn Darsey, Bleckley County Middle School, Cochran.

Seventh grade: Shawn Davis, Gilmer Middle School, Ellijay.

Eighth grade: Megan Brooks, Evans Middle School, Evans.

Ninth grade: Alison McCrary, Valdosta High School, Valdosta.

Tenth grade: Andrew Rowell, Brunswick High School, Brunswick.

Eleventh grade: Bobbie Hogan, Woodland School of the Arts, Cartersville.
